RE: Do gold compact discs actually sound better

No. There is nothing in the sputtering (the thin metallic layer that reflects the laser light) that affects the sound. However if the gold sputtering is genuinely gold (as opposed to just an added colour) then the life of the CD can be extended beyond that of a standard aluminium one. This may be of interest to you if you intend to live for the next couple of millennia ( see the Library of Congress white paper on optical disc ageing).
