Typically, the only connection in your audio system where you're matching impedances is a S/PDIF coaxial interface.
A standard analog interface between source and load is comprised of a source with low output impedance feeding a load with much higher input resistance.
A passive preamp is a variable interface but one that, if well implemented, will not have weak bass nor minimal dynamics.
