RE: Trouble balancing music and soundtrack audio

You need a compressor to tame those huge dynamic swings.
Modern soundtracks are mixed to impress with booms and shots and noisy stuff flying around the room; jump factor is high but not always practical.
I have the same problem when I want to watch a movie alone, late at night.

I used to have a cheap Philips DVD player which had a very handy "late night listening" switch, essentially flattening the dynamics, it worked a charm.
