elvis costello

So I also have a history with this musician. I moved to southern California in 1978, I had a real job for the first time and I started really collecting records. I got very heavily into the excitement of the whole punk and new wave records and bands. Of course My Aim is True was a purchase, and I listened to that a lot as well. It seemed to hit me right where I was then - "welcome to the working week, I know it don't thrill you, I hope it don't kill you..." And all of his first four albums were huge, still are huge for me...I met a woman at the dog park with a dog named Oliver, and Oliver's Army started going through my mind. These songs were big parts of my life. It was his 4th album, Get Happy, that started to be lyrically witty in ways that I would later associate with great classic writers like Cole Porter- "giving me away like motel matches.." So yes, he has gone down many various musical paths in the years since then, married audiophile jazz fave Diana Krall, moved into jazz and classical, and generally proved to be a serious artist. But I still prize his first 4 records most of all.
