Way back when his first LP came out, I think it was 1973, buying an album was a big splurge for me. But I read reviews and still enjoyed taking a chance on a "new Dylan." So I bought his first album when it was new, when nobody else I knew had any idea who this young guy might be.
In those days, I generally played albums many times over if I liked them. And I did play his album so often, that today, 47 years later, I find Sam Stone and Angel from Montgomery playing back in my mind, surprisingly vivid, though who knows how many years or decades since I've heard them.
I would hear a new album every so often, and they were always recognizably John Prine...but nothing ever struck me in the same deep way as that first album.
I saw him on the Grammy show not long ago, and he looked not too healthy, so I found he had been fighting cancer. And now this virus has ended that fight. Another unique and unforgettably musician is gone.
