I think oftentimes just how much we like/appreciate/despise our audio rigs, regardless of price, depends on our expectations of said rig and our mood at the time of listening.
My guess is you were relaxed, enjoying both your wife's company and the weather and didn't have any expectations whatsoever about the sound quality of the Sonos. Everything just sort of clicked.
Somewhat related: A few years ago my young son and I were sitting in lawn chairs in the shade of our front yard tree sans any electronics. Just sitting and enjoying the cool breeze, hearing the wind through the leaves and drinking our iced teas.
It was a special moment.
Then I stupidly decided to capture his image with my phone and as soon as I pulled it out and snapped a picture, the moment/feeling was completely gone.
From near magical to nothing unusual in a second. The specialness was totally gone.
Maybe something similar happened to you.
