I say this not from experience or memory, but from perusal of the archive of Allied (and, to a lesser extent, Radio Shack) catalogs (see resource below for Allied, e.g.). There for a while, there were page upon page of reel decks (and all-in-one 'tape recorders' - from the sublime to the ridiculous - in the catalogs.
In this particular, fairly randomly-chosen, example -- looks like pp 90 to 107 are 'tape machines' of various flavors.
Did folks buy 'em? What sort of survival rate do they (or their 'software') have? I have no idea .
Just a data point (such as it is).
