Actually hearing is done with the brain. The auditory system is just a means to get the data to the brain. It's the brain that hears differences. If a listener can consistently 'hear' differences it doesn't matter what the 'measurements' of the hearing system are. The next problem is interpreting what the differences mean, certainly a brain function. The biggest problem is deciding if the differences are because you like or prefer them or because of accurate reproduction or not, an almost infinite question when the ear/brain is involved. For that pray for more understanding and better tools of measurements.
