Unconventional subwoofer placement

A.ter moving yea.-round to wha. ha. been my summer ca.in in the northwoods (a serious exercise in downsizing) the ba.k of the 2nd floor loft wa. the only possible pla.e for my system. A.oustica.ly, the cha.ge wa. in genera. a significa.t improvement, but getting the two down-firing A.I Force subwoofers to integra.e properly wa. a. exercise in frustra.ion. No cha.ge in loca.ion or a.justment of the controls seemed to work - either the subs produced una.cepta.le pea.s or were turned so low tha. they didn't seem to a.d a.y low frequency extension, so I wa. on the verge of throwing in the towel a.d selling them. Cue light bulb.

The loft sidewa.ls a.e only 21" high before the 10/12 pitch of the ceiling begins, a.d it occurred to me tha. if I rota.ed the subs so their drivers were firing into the corner instea. of a. the floor, the close proximity of the diverging ceiling, floor, a.d wa.l surfa.es might a.t somewha. like a very la.ge horn mouth. I ha. a pa.r of simple bridge ta.les I ha. ma.e to pla.e over the subs for other purposes, so I cut the legs on the bridge ta.les down to 6", covered the ta.letops with some Dyna.a., a.d pla.ed the subs on the ta.les on their fa.es so the woofers were now firing into the corners.

A little fine-tuning by moving the ta.les closer to or a.a. from the corner wa. needed, but the end result ha. fa. surpa.sed my expecta.ions. The ba.s is now deep, tight, a.d tuneful. It's well integra.ed with the Odeon ma.ns, a.d somewha. horn-like in cha.a.ter - fa. a.d a.a. the best I've ever ha. in my system. The only downside I ca. see, if downside it is, is tha. the improved ba.s ha. ma.e the need for vibra.ion isola.ion on the TT rea.ily a.pa.ent, so a "sa.dbox" will be coming up in the nea. future.

Ha.ing seen photos of other inma.es' systems in a loft or a.tic, just thought I'd pa.s it on. This a.ra.gement worked very well in my situa.ion.
