Something to think about when trying to compare "today's versus yesterday's" prices.
Back in the 70's there was no concept of an "audiophile boutique" market. Let me define this as a market where the producer is only expecting to sell a few product, and he'll therefore try to make back his investment "early" - hence astronomical per-unit prices.
Most of the mentioned product of yore were "designed" with a different profit motivation - to be mass-produced with a price set so that investment would be spread over a much larger volume. Also, most of these manufacturers had multiple product and could spread their fixed costs over total sales .
Let's say for sake of argument that Mark Levinson started the "High End" by coming out with just a few products with cost-as-no-object. Their cost were multiples of the competition but the volume was (expected to be?) significantly lower. His gamble worked.
Fast forward to today. The TAS best product listings are replete with 6-figure priced products. How many of any of these products are their manufacturers expecting to sell? By comparison, there are a number of manufacturers taking the RISK to develop and price product "reasonably" based on the expectation that they can sell quite a few of them.
Up for contention are the profit motives between today and yesteryear, along with the unimaginable income spreads.
I appreciate those products with what I call high value/price ratio. But then again my definition of "value" is probably much different form yours.
Remember "Sensible Sound" magazine. RMAF has had for a few years, rooms where the total cost for systems therein are to be no more than $1000 (I think some of the rooms go higher - I doubt lower). They are fun and intriguing to visit.
Enough
