A few months ago I replaced the laser mech in my Marantz SA-11, which has a notoriously short-lived laser, without much difficulty. New part cost $20, versus paying service center $350. No calibration or adjustment was necessary. Plays like new. I bought four extra lasers, so I hope those will last a while.

Take your time, be careful. Make notes or take pics of what goes where as you take it apart.
