You are lucky, and smart. My loss happened in the span of about three years when I was running an engine lathe: metal cutting metal a couple feet from my head all day long, plus all the ambient noise from other screeching machines. My left ear, which usually faced the cutting tool, is now getting really bad, distorting the stereo image. But you're right about the brain compensating somewhat. Getting high helps, too.
