RE: watts...tube vs. solid state

Part of the issue is the inconsistency in the industry. There's "suggested" ways to list wattage numbers for an amp, but that doesn't mean everyone is following it. If one company quotes 1% at 8 ohms and someone else picks "maximum power" at 10% at 4 ohms without listing how they arrived at that number, it throws the whole market off.

The other part is that you then get into the different ways output stages are designed, which affects how loud an amp can get before it starts sounding unpleasant a lot more than the rating, so wattage becomes less useful. One solid state design can differ quite a bit from another, for example, and the entire thing gets too difficult to track properly by a single number.
