I always watch the Grammies. It's an old habit. What's more I listen in the car mostly to pop radio so I know all these artists and songs. Seems like most people here have complete contempt for pop music, so of course they should skip the Grammies.
To try to address your actual question, it seems like most criticism of the actual awards is that they are way too conservative. This year is a great example. Bruno Mars got all 3 big awards. It's hard to dislike him, he's taken James Brown's title as the hardest working man in show business, and he's a born entertainer. His album is a conscious throwback to retro funk styles, and it's a party record.
It got little critical respect because most critics look for emotional depth. But it has been very popular. As the critics write their reviews, they are not happy that it won over Kendrick Lamar, a big critical favorite.
I don't care too much, these awards represent an extremely tiny sliver of all the music that comes out in a year, there are already many best of 2017 music lists in all genres that go far deeper. Critics want this big platform to push innovation, but that rarely happens. Last year, it happened when Stugill Simpson won best country album. But it's a secret and obviously conservative voting population.
