RE: Investigate this unit

Hi Fantja,

The DX-5 and C-5 transports are easy to answer. They're the transports that were used in the unit each unit was based on. For the DX-5, that was the Oppo BDP-83, and the C-5 was a Pioneer DV-45A. We chose both of these players are our starting points at the time as they were of the highest quality available from mass-marketed products at the time as well as offered some unique benefits (not many Blu-Ray players play SACD's, for example). If you're looking for spare replacement drives, those are the models to look for first. I know with the Pioneer, a few other lines of theirs carried the same transport, but I'm pretty confident the Oppo is only the BDP-8x series.

If you're wondering why we didn't just make our own: unfortunately, when you're dealing with formats like DVD and Blu-Ray, it becomes prohibitively expensive to design and license a player unless you're going to sell thousands of them, which companies in this industry simply will not see to justify the cost, so we have to work with companies to have a starting point. We then cut just about every piece off the original unit we can and replace it with our own technologies to make it worthy of carrying the Ayre name and worth the price to those that want unparalleled sound...and in the case of the DX-5, picture quality. It still looks better even than the 4K players out today to me and now 3D is all but gone.

For the CX-7, we are using a TEAC transport which we purchased a lifetime supply of before they stopped making them. They make fantastic Red Book CD transports, so unless your collection has SACDs or DVDs in it, they're really ideal. I haven't looked around too much to see what's around today, but with the units we have, there hasn't been much reason to investigate anything else.
