I reject the thesis. I read monthly magazines Mojo, Uncut and The Wire (classical mags too but that's not relevant). I also check out reviews in The Guardian and other papers and check out a few websites.I also love to catch Jools Holland's BBC shows.
There is not a month that goes by that I don't find interesting music.
As far as radio pop, I listen to it in the car, just as I've done since childhood. Some songs I grow to like and others I don't, pretty much the same as I've always reacted to the pop charts in every era.
Right now I look forward to Dua Lipa, whom I first saw on Jools Holland, and whose song is as pop as it gets, but it's catchy and I've come to appreciate all the details buried in a very dense mix.
And btw I've never been a huge Sparks fan, but I've listened a lot to last year's Hippopotomus.
