RE: New "Audiophile" Needs Some Info!

Forget the equalizer. With decent equipment, it is completely unnecessary and quite probably detrimental.

Spend that money (the most money) on speakers. They have the most difficult job in the entire system, and more money almost always gets better technology, design, drivers, etc. The subwoofer should be considered an add-on, not essential to a basic system. The Klipsch name means nothing these days, so consider speakers from a smaller company that makes ONLY speakers. How about building a really easy kit? You can buy the enclosure and separate drivers (see Parts Express, Madisound) and put a little sweat equity into your system to save a few bucks. There is very little to screw up, and you need only basic tools.

As for the electronics, an insane level of quality and features is available for not much money. Yamaha makes decent mass-market gear. Don't get caught up in output power and tiny distortion specs. Fifty watts RMS per channel is plenty, and you'll hardly know the difference between .01% and .001% distortion. And do you really need 5.1?

Cables play an important role, but they don't need to cost a lot to be adequate. Don't buy the big box store stuff, but any entry level "audio" cable company will be decent. I favor Audioquest, especially at beginner level, but debate rages over who makes "the best." The used cable market will considerably extend the reach of your budget with almost zero downside.

Peace,
