random thoughts on Newport Beach T.H.E Show

I've come to really enjoy this annual tradition. I went to all 3 days, going slowly room to room, lots of talking, and still never made it to 1/2 of the 10th floor.

For one reason or another, I found myself less critical. I found many setups to be splendid, and very few that drove me quickly out of the room.

For me, the magic of great audio is when the speakers disappear and the music occupies solid positions in a room. My top experience of this effect was in the Perfect8 room playing Dead Can Dance.

A memorable listen was in the prana room. They played a test pressing of a remaster of the old Blood Sweat and Tears song Spinning Wheel. Never my favorite song, and it was played to death a long time ago. This was so present and detailed however that both me and my friend thought it must be a new cover version. It was not. So it was one of those moments where you hear an old song anew and appreciate aspects you've never known were there.

Another memorable listen was in Woo Audio, to the Stax headphones with their amp. I've gotten more and more into headphones in the last few years, and I have Audeze- but these Stax are a whole other level.

Format wars are still being fought, with very strong proponents. But for me, it has all but stopped mattering. I heard Kraftwerk streamed from Tidal on the big Acoustic Zen system upstairs. It was great. Would it have been better on vinyl? Probably. But it sure was good as it was.

The Zu audio room was a little smaller and I did not get a lot of time there this year. As always, they have lots of vinyl of recent music like Sturgill Simpson. I wish there were more of this sensibility. Most music being played ranges from old to extremely old. That doesn't mean it's bad of course. But Zu audio is all around more fun than most other rooms.

Massive props to NFS, just a hangout room with a light show and tweaked out vintage equipment and a selection of absinthes, where you can just talk to people and nobody is pitching anything.

My impulse purchase was a Chord Mojo, an essential addition to my growing menagerie of mobile audio and it's just what I needed.
