RE: Thorens 160 - removing Dynamat - substitue cork

Years ago there was a white brush-on coating that was said to dampen resonance, so I painted the underside of my Thorens 125 platter. This year I took it off, as I was never able to get really solid speed stability. On taking it off I realized two things: 1) That stuff really worked to dampen ringing, and; 2) having that stuff on the platter really unbalanced the platter. With the stuff scraped off, speed stability is rock solid, at least after the first few minutes. (The Wein bridge oscillator on the 125 takes a couple minutes to stabilize. Actually it has to warm up, as there is a neon bulb in the servo-circuit that has to reach its operating temp.)

As I now have the Merrill lead mat epoxied in place (I made a jig to center it) the only part of the platter that still rings when I tap it is the side, so I may try some of those rubber rings... or not.

Dampening the sub-chassis with cork helped. Replacing that cork with lead sheet glued in place *really* helped. The next step is to try some lead around the bearing shaft housing.
