Somewhere in some thread I mentioned some kludgy attempts to fix a static problem I have in the winter. The discharge would almost always kill everything on my USB hub. (Interestingly, the Metric Halo DAC never had a problem, in sharp contrast to the Avid converters, which got zapped all the time.) So I ordered a static control work mat from ebay.
Then today, with the new mat still in its box, I got a big fuzzy pop through the speakers, and thought maybe an output tube had shorted. Checked the outputs, all good. Could that have been a static discharge? Donno, but still...
So let's use this thing. It works pretty well, though I had to abandon their built-in snaps, because the snaps don't fit in my slide-out desk and I ripped one out the first time I slid it in and back out. Still, it works pretty well. It's not instantaneous, but does dissipate any charge in a few seconds or so. It's another kludge, but it's next to the dowel-in-the-desk kludge that keeps the desk extended, so we're done for now. It's a work space, not a show space.
