sounds like you need a more global approach

Furniture (cabinets, credenzas, armoires, even a closet) is not a practical solution for an audiophile system. That's why the majority of audiophile systems are "in the open". And if there is "dust in the air", the solution is to get the dust out of the air. Unless you both live in a dusty area AND leave the windows open, it's not as daunting as it would seem.

If your system in now in the living area, for the family to enjoy, then you need to address the problem with a 'whole house' approach, which incidently would be good for the health of your family as well!

The two most effective tools are electrostatic filters AND (not and/or!) air ionizers. If you have central (forced air) heating and cooling, then installing serious in-duct electrostatic filter equipment is the first step; and then placing room ionizers in the larger spaces to catch what the electostat misses (what comes in when people enter/leave the house, or open the windows, etc.) If you don't have a forced air system, then there are some very quiet floor standing units that can treat an average house of 1200 to 2000 sq ft. If you also live in a very dry climate, adding humidification (central or room) can provide additional dust conrol (as well as improving resiratory health and reducing allergy and sinus problems!)

Yes, this stuff will cost more than custom cabinets; but it adds value to your home, and provides health benefits for the whole family, not just a clean audio system; and in most cases it's either deductible as home improvement, or as an addition to the cost basis of your property.

Trying to protect just the equipment from dust is an exercise in futility. Why do you think the Swiffer became such a profitable product? ;--)
