BAck in the 80's, I had just gotten back from being stationed in Germany and brought back with me what I thought was a good system: JBL speakers, Carver amp, Yamaha pre-amp, EQ, KLH pop & click machine Dennon turntable.
The nearest civilization was Memphis, TN and I found myself in some typical mid-fi shop, didn't remember what I was looking for.
I asked the salesman if there were other shops in town and he told me of Opus One, and Underground Sound.
Visited Opus, and for the first time in my life heard a true soundstage. I felt like I could have walked around between the performers. I recall it was an LP-12 table, Mark Levinson Gear and Magnepan speakers.
He also sold Krell, but I didn't like the way it sounded (and still don't).
Traded in the JBL's on some Vandersteen 2C's.
Later I went to see George Merrill at Underground Sound, and things only got worse. I think I went down there almost every weekend to hear new gear and work on getting rid of my other stuff.
High end audio was a great escape from the stress of the long hours at work and the depression of being stationed in AR.
By the time I left the area, I had a Counterpoint amp & pre-amp, Acoustat 3 speakers, a better phono cart, Audioquest cables, a subscription to this little magazine called Stereophile,
...and a life long addiction.
Thanks a lot George ;-)
