RE: Vacuum Tube Amplifier Course at SUNY Oneona

Will do Michael - Dr Barstow is a great guy.

I love the Music Dept here - taking all the courses that I can.

Took the first (of four) Audio Arts course which was VERY interesting. Basically an introduction to sound; recording techniques and digital editing (remaining 3 courses apparently dwell on advanced / enhanced? editing) . Problem was/is that the students (and by expansion - all recordists??) today, transfer the many? tracks of recorded product into digital IMMEDIATELY so they can then MANIPULATE the sound. The capability of "Pro Tools" (the program they use) is both stunning and unsettling. The class did a few "recording labs" where we then listened to the individual recorded tracks and then found out how to make each track "better". Then it is a matter of combining (presenting) the tracks - kind of like painting them onto a three-dimensional sonic canvas. I came away realizing that in a lot of cases, the ultimate "artist?" today is the producer or whomever calls the shots on how the final product will sound - by "spinning dials" on a PC in the editing booth. The musicians are pawns - unless, I guess, if they have enough clout and/or actually care about how the final product actually sounds.
