Zerosurge listening tests

Coincidentally, I was just doing some listening tests with my 20A Zerosurge. When only my amp was plugged into the Zerosurge, it was a marked improvement. Tightened the voices, reduced background noise, took away a certain "shouty-ness" I was hearing when I plugged the amp into the wall. Overall very similar in effect to my now-dead 2kva iso transformer. Very nice, and a whole lot greener than running a 90lb iso transformer all the time.

Regarding your concern--restricting dynamics--I don't think it did with just the amp plugged in. I suppose that the reduced "shouty-ness" *could* have been reduced dynamics, but I chalk it up to getting rid of some EMI/RF. More listening tests in the future.

I also tried using the Zerosurge with my CDP and preamp. The Zerosurge I got only has two outlets, so I wasn't able to plug all three components, so I piggybacked a Monster Cable HTS 1000 into the Zerosurge. I tried this arrangement both with and without the amp plugged into the Zerosurge at the same time. In both cases, the front end components did not like the Zerosurge. No dynamics, and generally muddled, when compared to just the HTS 1000 with front end components. Perhaps this was due to overfiltering with the piggyback arrangement.

YMMV. (With power conditioning, your mileage may really really vary.)

If you are interested in the Zerosurge, there are new 20A units right now on Ebay for $150 obo.

Even used, the PS audio quintet will run you more than $200. However, if you do get it, please post your results, and let us know how it sounds with a power amp plugged in. It's on my listening test list, too!
