Hearing is information your ears can detect and transmit to the brain which then deciphers the info into something useful or meaningful and in the case of music, hopefully pleasurable.
Having a measured roll-off of response above 13khz. is quite average for most adults so don't feel you are missing a lot of 'the music' and therefore don't need a truly hi-fi system because you can't tell the difference between mediocre and truly great reproduction.
If you can't discern the differences between hi-fi components it probably isn't your hearing but rather you have not trained your mind to listen deeply with focused concentration, filtering out all distractions.
Unfortunately there is no manual you can consult or instructional CD as far as I know so you will have to develop your listening skills the old fashioned way. Practice, practice and more practice.
Of course all this is unnecessary unless you want to be a reviewer of music, hi-fi gear or a professional sound engineer.
Just enjoy the music for what it is and don't worry that your cat or dog is experiencing more.
J.
