Rick,
I suggest that having, "looked once at each of those [Water Cooler and Outside] fora" is not sufficient to judge the corrosive effects of political and religious discussion on the other fora.
As you mention concentrating on the technical discussions, I would suggest further that you are not seeing the subtle, but increasing effects on Music, Film -the arts and social pages. These subjects inevitably contain topics that have inherent religious, economic and political content whereas I can't think of any political topics on Tubes- except perhaps which German manufacturer made GZ34's for the NAZIs- as pointless as avoiding buying a Mitsubishi car because "they" made Zero fighters 65 years ago.
What I believe you are missing by not reading WC and Outside and not participating in the arts fora is the slop-over from Outside and Water cooler into any place that touches on social subjects. I recently began to notice it here on General as well. In my view, this is due to the concentration on the technical issues.
As you experiencing Audio Asylum negatively over five years, your opinion is as valid as any, but trust me, the political content is causing a lot of unhappiness in the places you're not going. My prediction is that, allowed to continue, the spill-over and low moral will creep into the technical conversations too. There is a poster on WC who is also an audio technician and I see little digs creeping from both sides when discussing equipment repair and modification on a technical forum- there's a little posturing and puffery. Someone who had not see the invective hurled at each other elsewhere would be forgiving for not noticing, but I find it disappointing- and I believe a lot of others are put off by this insidious atmosphere.
You are of course allowed your position of saying, i.e. "let it fly, it's good to let off steam", but I for one would hope to steer an online community like this one away from the souring effects of that policy. I've given it 10 years, reading thousands of posts and the conditions only get worse.
Cheers,
Bambi B
