RE: Setting up a new 2 channel system based on available equipment

Again, as your choices are limited it makes it very difficult to pick a clear winner. If you haven't ordered your amplifier yet, my preference would be JADIS over ACOUSTIC RESEARCH in general but I have never heard them in the same context. I find the JADIS gear very musical and the AR a bit more clinical or sterile. This is not to deter you if you feel more comfortable with the company who produces the amplifier used to 'voice' your chosen speaker. That could very well speak of it's neutral sound quality. Personally, I would chose warmth over neutrality. The true test is listening to both for extended periods and see which one puts a bigger smile on your face and you are not able to do that.

I was in Montreal this weekend and heard a lot of gear. The system that pleased me the most and held me in the room for two hours (and I could have listened all day) was a pair of $8000.00 floorstanders driven by a $2000.00 integrated tube amplifier (2x25 watts triode mode)
I have to qualify this by saying the music was supplied by a $25,000.00 SACD player spinning very well produced CDs. This brings me back to my point about the importance of the initial source of music. I have the predecessor to this player and fervently believe they are the very best, 'all in one box' CD players commercially available.
My second favorite were $45,000.00 loudspeakers driven by battery powered solid-state of the art amplifiers. Very quiet and precise for sure and really enjoyable but the combination was well over $150,000.00 and it still fell short of my first pick by a substantial margin.
If you would like the brand names and models of my favorite music room this weekend you can email me directly as I do not wish to publicize this at the forum. I feel it would be inappropriate and may cause a flurry of attacks which I have no interest in defending against. I mean, all this is my personal opinion based on experiences both past and present and my listening skills and experience with live music. Listening to a lot of live music in small venues does give you a good reference to what reproduced music should sound like. IMHO

I hope you remain patient and are rewarded for it. Cheers.

J.
