Question - audio "qualities" between Krell HTS 1 and Audio + Video Standard

Hi;

I picked up both a Krell HTS and an Audio + Video Standard (A+VS) preamp/processor. These both date from the late 90's and are the original 5 channel units - not the updated versions.

I'd like to use one of them as an audio only preamp and have some questions for those of you who hopefully remember some of their functionality (that is NOT mentioned in their manuals)

First question - I understand that if you use the A+VS unit in the "preamp mode", any analog audio signals routed through it STAY in the analog domain, whereas all analog signals routed through the (original) HTS unit are converted to digital and then back to analog (ie. they don't stay in the analog domain). Is this correct?

Second question has to do with potentially using the high quality A/D feature built into both? preamps (or at least the A+VS). What "standard" does an analog signal get digitized to - red book CD? If so, can I then route the digital signal to my Sony burner using the optical output bypassing the "inferior" A/D in the Sony?

THANK YOU

Charles
