audioman,
Is "hydro" a Canadian slang for hydro-electric power? I've never heard that term used in that way. Is power where you are coming from Niagra Falls?
As for getting an idea of power usage and cost, I made a similar calculation recently. I moved in June to a 1947 house with one large wall mounted air conditioner that I knew was older and inefficient. I added two 8000 BTU window air conditioners and was able to use the manufacturer's specifications for power draw against a rate chart and calculate that they cost me about $.09 per hour each to run.
Because Class A draws more or less at full power all the time, and assuming you can verify the power consumption specification, I imagine you could make a similar calculation for your power amplifier.
Using tube gear a long while, I'm somewhat mindful of the electric meter running too- but I've never tried to work out the cost as I only know that the Audio Research D115 (2X105W from 8-6550's, 1985) draws 400W at idle and up to 1600W at full power.
[By the way, I'm quite sure that cooling only the rooms I'm using during the day with the individual, smaller, very efficient window units is saving on electricity costs for me. My power bills (Los Angeles)in the last three months have averaged about $80-90 per month and my neighbour in a similar sized house- three bedrooms, 1,800 square feet- said he is spending about $200]
If you don't mind me asking, what are your typical monthly electrical bills in Ontario and for what kind of residence?
Cheers,
Bambi B
