RE: The 63s are easier to work with

Thanks for the invite, it would be a lot of fun! It looks like a must to hear the '63s too. I'll give you a call later on when my summer starts to wind down.

My computer audio still isn't up to par with my CD playback, but I'll be working on it again this winter. The best sound at my place still comes from LP's, but more often than not I'm too lazy to keep flipping them every 20 minutes.

I'll buy a Burwen Bobcat USB DAC if given the opportunity, as a reference for evaluating other DAC's. There was one up at Agon, but it was sold by the time I came across it.

The Saturn sounded good, but it seemed to play to the ears more than to the soul. That's probably not a fair assessment because of the limited time listening, and system synergy is always a big factor. It appears that the Bobcat is a great match with your system. Yes, I would very much like to hear it again.

- You said "they sound great as I walk about the room"

Very interesting! It would be nice to have at least 6 dedicated music rooms, each with one of my all-time favourite speakers. Quad ESLs would be in one of those rooms. Every time I hear a pair of ESL's it's tempting to take them home with me. But I've never had a space where they would work up to their capability and at home I just about never sit in the sweet spot. The '63s just might work for me.

They'd have to go in the living room, and of course, they would have to pass WAF - which in my case is actually a good thing, because my wife loves music and the sound of equipment is above appearance on her list of priorities (within reason!). The way it works is I bring the equipment home and set it up. She lives with it for a while and at some point (5 minutes to 5 days) she lets me know what she thinks. The system may sound good (lots do), but she has to emotionally connect to the music for the equipment to pass. She has chosen most of our present equipment. I have to admit that she is better than me at choosing equipment, although she has no interest in going out and finding equipment. It takes more long-term listening for me to come to, usually, the same conclusions. But, I have digressed!

When I think about it, that's actually a very economical hifi system you have. Take the price of a fully rebuilt pair of '57's, not that much for the Bobcat, pocket change for the 303, add a USB cable to your computer and altogether it's only a fraction of what most of us have in our systems. Should be a standard recommendation for newbies. (There goes any chance of getting a Bobcat USB!)

- You said "We should invite RGA as well?!?!?!?!?"

It's your place so it's up to you. I've never met him, but likely he'd have an opinion about something.
