docW,Here's a thought:
CD Player: Rotel 1072: $450
Tuner: Marantz ST7001: $300 (new)
Preamp - line stage- Audio Research LS3 : $600
Power Amplifier- Audio Research D200 (110W X 2): $750
Speakers: Vandersteen 1C : yes- not exactly compact monitors: $450
Interconnects: 2X Audioquest Diamondback and 1X King Cobra .75M: $240
Speaker cables: Audioquest- don't know length: budget: $200TOTAL: $2,990
In my view, the sound from the above could be suitably good for a main system at home plus be reliable for years and years with long hours of use.
I use an ARC LS3 with a D130 in my office and the LS3 is amazingly detailed and neutral- plus fantastic imaging and clarity at low levels. These are built to run for decades too. The Rotel 1072 I think is a great deal- so nice for the money that I'm thinking of changing my Cambridge Audio 640C for one ($700 new). The Vandersteen 1C's seems to be, as for all Vandersteens, a good fit with ARC electronics as are the Audioquest IC's and speaker wires. I've not heard the Marantz ST7001 tuner, but I thought the ST 6000 model was better than it should be for the price. ST6000s are around used for $100-150 too.
In my view, an insistence on new stuff is understandable, especially with CD players, but at the level of quality of gear like Audio Research, I would have no qualms in recommending even 20 year equipment. However, a new system might be something done around a Jolida 1501RC remote, hybrid integrated (2X 100W): $825- providing the delight of both a couple of tubes and remote, and Triangle speakers like the Cometes, CDP like the Cambridge Audio 540C which are going for only $300 at Audio Advisor at the moment.
Just a thought.
