This may or may not help: Years ago in high school, our electronics teacher hung a 'clothesline affair on which cardboard egg trays were hung. The ceiling was a good twenty feer high with hard surfaces everywhere so when he lectured reflected sound made his speech almost incoherent.
After the application of the 'clothesline' the room shrunk acoustically and speech was very intelligeable. If done with colorfully painted egg crates (trays) I think the 2 1/2 dozen size it will not appear too shabby and it does reduce the cavern sound of vaulted ceilings immensily.
Spray paint should be latex based flat applied lightly as possible for minimal reflection.
I hope this helps. It won't cost much to try. Just time and patience. Cheers.
