I don't need speaker stands at the moment, nor was I a part of this thread, but using brick in the way you advocate makes so much sense I just had to chime in! A great way to provide solid support (easily customizable) and good mass loading, and IMO, brick can be made to look very classy in a living room environment.
If your suggestion "catches on", I fully expect to see certain companies introduce "audiophile" brick which has been cryo'ed and blasted with a magnetic field so as to "reorder" the individual atoms in the brick such that nothing interferes with the "flow" of the music-I'm sure the improvements in palpability, imaging, soundstaging, and air will be a revelation! Mark my words...
