the CDs in question sound good on those persons' systems, and they're legitmately surprised at how they sound on your's.

BTW, that's a nice idea to take a music gift for the host.

Another practice, which as a host I've done in the past, is to not expect a gift, but to provide refreshments to the visitors (not enough refreshment, mind you, to risk trashing a cartridge or LP ;)
The favor is then reciprocated when I'm the guest at someone else's place. A sort of potlatch, if you like.

At other times I've taken a piece of my equipment that the host has wanted to hear in their system, and I'll even leave it for a few days if the host is trustworthy.
