If a lot of companies go under, there will be a lot of unrepairable, orphan gear out there, and the damage will extend far and wide.
As for why there is so much equipment (particularly in high price ranges), I offer this explanation: OPM. Yes, it's Other People's Money being spent by entrepreneurs with far vision but short sight. It is surprisingly easy to start an audio company and not that hard to look like a viable concern even when you're not
I usually eschew the automotive analogy, but if the U.S. had 50,000 car companies things would be much like the way they now are in the audio High End.
