A little maybe...

I notice that I've been intending to do it for about a year, that tells me something. The rub is that even though there is but a weak correlation between cost and most attributes of performance, a number of posters clearly equate them. I cringe when someone refers to their gear as "Mid-Fi". It's always code for "I didn't spend a king's ransom on it" as opposed to "it has some significant shortcomings".

The last Stereophile show I went to was over a decade ago in SFO. I only found two systems regardless of price that I liked better than mine. One was so big that it was impractical unless you live in a blimp hanger and the other was quite small but sounded fabulous. However, as he demonstrated after we got to visiting for a while, the main thing that made the difference was some Synergistic interconnect cables that they had dropped off at his room to try. So, I concluded that I was done for then, but needed to work on my cables. Which I did and that really frosted the cake.

It's important to know both when you've "arrived" and that it's possible. As so many wise people have said over the years, you can tell that by how much time you spend listening. I spent many years of changing gear and messing around to get to this point and it's been sweet to enjoy the payoff.

Thanks for bringing up the point. Maybe I can screw up the courage to admit that I do 80% of my listening in the study using a $125 Panasonic receiver. And that it's definitely a Hi-Fi system!
