I set up & calibrated my neighbor's big screen 4:3 TV.
He didn't want letter boxed format on movies, but pan & scan so it filled the whole screen.
He told me, "Dammit, I bought a big screen and I want all of that screen used." "Why would I not want to use big sections of my screen I paid for?"
I'll bet that attitudes like that and ignorance are the 2 most common reasons newer model TV's are not set right.
It drives me nuts too, I hate wrong aspect ratios.
Some channels on my Dish Network HD package piss me off too. For example: TNT and TBS "HD" when not actually playing an HD program stretch the edges of the picture to fill the screen.
Watching images suddenly expand and contract as they get near the edges make me dizzy.
