WHAT IS IT MAN??? (Question for the Audio shrink's out there)

My stereo sounds great......and it bores me. (see inmate systems)
Sometimes it isn't turned on for weeks. It is in the living room and even thought I do have to share the space with TV watchers, the urge to play it isn't very strong.
In the past year I've been through 3 different speakers, 3 amps, 3 kinds of speaker cables, 2 CD players, 2 turntables, 2 phono stages......
I can't seem to put my finger on what the problem is. Years ago, I couldn't wait to get home and play music, and I rarely watched TV. Now it's different.
Why am I missing that "THING" that makes you loose yourself in the music? The "THING" that has you staying up way longer than you intended because you needed to play "just one more"?
I'm tempted to chuck it all and just buy a real simple, cheap, but good Rega or Creek/Epos system so I have something that plays music, and call it done.
You know the funny part? What's really been satisfying me lately is my portable headphone system. IPod with a line out connection to a Headroom Micro amp, and either Etymotic ER-4 or Shure ES530 earphones. What does the portable headphone system do that the big rig doesn't?
