There are many approaches and here's one I'll offer with new equipment.Get an integrated or digital receiver.
Panasonic XR55 is a good choice for around $220 new off Amazon.

Their Intimus 632-LR bookshelf speakers for $600 are an excellent deal.

Overall that's less than $1000. You can get decent wire/cabling from a place like Element cables and have a great system.
