OK, here's one approach

There are many approaches and here's one I'll offer with new equipment.

Get an integrated or digital receiver.
Panasonic XR55 is a good choice for around $220 new off Amazon.

For speakers, Infinity Primus is a good choice. But another lesser mentioned brand that allows in home demo is AperionAudio from Portland.
Their Intimus 632-LR bookshelf speakers for $600 are an excellent deal.

Get the budget priced SD-4000 Toshiba DVD player for $50 and be ready for very good satisfying sound.

Overall that's less than $1000. You can get decent wire/cabling from a place like Element cables and have a great system.

Obviously many ways to skin a cat.
