Here's my conundrum

> "Does analog sound better than digital? If so, why do my CDRs of LP's sound so good?" <

That was the first question I asked myself when I started looking into the reasons for the horrible CD playback I was getting a few years ago. I bought a Marantz CD recorder because I had several hundred cassettes that I wanted to archive before they went belly up. Someone encouraged me to try an experiment with recording LP's to CD-R's and listening for differences. I could never tell which was playing.

But when I would compare my CD-R's from vinyl to the commercially produced CD, my CD-R always sounded better... and I don't mean just warmer and smoother, I mean more like live music. The CD not only added a shrillness in the upper midrange, it also rolled off the top end.

My conclusion (totally non-scientific) is that if CD is a proper storage vehicle (and it seems that it is since it records all the info from an LP), something happened in the mastering stage of the commercial CD. I've always been curious what! But whatever it is, I believe it's the cause of all the consternation regarding the sound of CD.
