Geometry…

Provided the listening/viewing position remains fixed, pulling the speakers forward into the room increases the ratio of the early front wall reflection distance to the direct path distance. As that ratio increases, the location of the front wall reflection points shift away from the point on the front wall midway between the speakers and closer to the points immediately behind the speakers. Provided the speakers are far enough apart and also far enough in front of the wall and the screen is placed far enough back, the early reflection points will be on the wall and relatively unaffected by the screen. That would also allow you to place absorption at the early reflection points and perhaps improve imaging a little more.

If the speakers have to be extremely close to the sides of the screen, try moving the screen to a point level with to a little bit forward of the speaker baffle. That will ensure any reflections from the speaker will be on the side of the screen and therefore directed towards the sides or rear of the room rather than towards you. You may notice an effect from the screen but the imaging may not be quite as bad as when you have an early reflection reaching you from the front of the screen.
