Re: They did it again !

To be fair let me begin by saying that I'm selling a new DCC2 on Audiogon.

I am not a frequent poster to either Audiogon nor AA. In fact, even though I read Audiogon off and on over the last several years, I never knew AA exisited until a few weeks ago.

I bought a nice hi end system several years ago and since completing that purchase I stopped actively reading about gear.

I got caught up in all this as a result of my PS Audio Lambda dying which forced me into the market for a new transport to drive my Wadia 27i. I saw all the EMM Labs reviews and became very interested. I auditioned a few pieces directly from EMM Labs and the sound is absolutely amazing. All that you've read is no exageration at all - this stuff is very good.

I'm just a working stiff who likes good sound and investing in EMM Labs with all this swirling around made me very frustrated and nervous. I contacted several dealers regarding the gear for sale on Audiogon and here's what I learned....

The reason there are so many EMM Labs pieces on sale at Audiogon is that EMM Labs changed their distributorship for the US and all the old dealers are dumping their inventory. EMM Labs recently appointed Jonathan Tinn as their VP of marketing. The problem is Jonathan owns a dealership (Chambers Audio) in Oregon and that made most of the exisitng dealers so pissed off that they dropped the line. As you guys know, small dealers make their $$ based on exclusive sales territories and most of the existing EMM Labs dealers saw this recent move as very threatening to them.

I got this from two dealers who I spoke with about buying some EMM Labs gear. Both of the delaers I spoke with had identical stories and both had very good things to say about the company and Jonathan Tinn. They were also very upbeat about the company's future. They both loved their products but they were very disapointed in their marketing/sales. One guy in particlular was very sorry that he felt he was forced to drop the line because of this. Both guys said that EMM Labs are great engineers but poor sales people.

The other driving factor is that EMM Labs has just introduced SE upgrades for the DCC2 and the CDSD. The CDSD is unchanged but the price increased $500. The DCC2 price increased $2000 but Jonathan could not describe what the changes were.

There was a very eagerly anticipated bake-off of an original DAC6e and a DAC6e SE to be posted on Audiogon. The only thing I read from that bake-off was that the upgrade was about as significant as what one would get from a good power cord upgrade. I assume, but I don't know for certain, that those comments are what led Audiogon to kill the threads.

Like dCS, EMM Labs makes most of their revenue from selling professional audio hardware to recording/mixing studios and the audiophile products are spin offs from the pro stuff. That gives them a solid revenue stream outside of the audiophile line which just enhances the long term health outlook EMM Labs.

I took this as an oportunity to snap up some great gear at very low prices and ended up buying 2 DCC2s and a CDSD. My intent was to run one in my 2 channel system and the other in my home theater using my universal player as a transport. My wife just about had a fit regarding the 2nd DCC2 and my buyer for my Wadia 27i backed out. That is why I have a new DCC2 up for sale.

Feel free to contact me offline to discuss any of this in more detail.
