You are "often told by manufacturers that it hurts their company's image". It is not your job to second guess their marketing expertise but to represent them. If you can't do that effectively or appropriately then you are detracting from their image.
We never advertise new product on Audiogon or ebay. It is full of problems and can be a real snake pit. When we get an old piece of gear that may be something unusual or that we would be happy to ship, then that is where it goes. In that way, used equipment can be "recycled" or "relocated" without much damaging effect to current producers. There is more to it than just your sales. You need to consider the livelyhood of the industry if you want to succeed long term or to actually support it, IMO. If you do not understand their reasoning, perhaps you should ask them.
