I think most manufacturers hate Audiogon...opportunity missed

Look at other enthusiast websites. Timezone for watches, Ferrarichat, Roadfly w/ BMW and Porsche forums. It's about painting an image about a cool hobby, the fun, the friendships.

On Audiogons opening page it's about auctions starting at $1. It's so cheesy. Like a $1 chinese food restaraunt (or are those only in Los Angeles?).

Never mind that they of course don't sell for that $1...or that most of the time they don't meet reserve, it's the way it takes stuff that is not only fun, but important (music) and products that people pour their hearts and soul into to design and make, usually never getting rich doing it, and having them reduced to the lowest common denominator.

The other point would be the number of people selling products that are grey market / bought sideways / or maybe not even legally owned by the person seling them (it's a long story on how thgat can and does happen...but it does). If as a manufacturer you see something being sold that is an outright lie because you know for FACT that the product is not a U.S. market product, they won't take the ad down, but they WILL sell you banner space like

http://www.audiogon.com/samp/anthem/

or http://www.audiogon.com/samp/sumiko/

which people fail to read until they get screwed. And they may not be aware of getting screwed for years.

The guys that run it are fine folks no doubt. But there are ways to do things to create excitement in the market and traffic and still profit. I think Audiogon is going full speed in the wrong direction.

As to manufacturers not caring about dealers....maybe in pro music, but no so much in high end. Too easy to go outta biz. High end manufacturers ride a tighter rope between success and failure and my experience is many are responsive or at least try to be. The companies are not that big or fat financially.
