Balderdash.

There is every price range in new equipment represented by dealers on Audiogon.

I admit I tend to think of A-gon as more of an outlet for owners' used euqipment and store demo gear. But let's face it, the high end is a niche parket. Audiogon, however, gets a bunch of traffic. Lots of high end shoppers = lots of exposure for high end products, especially new products. Where's the down side? You go where the customers are.

I think it's possible that in cities where they don't have a dealer, some (by no means all) manufacturers may want to sell to customers direct - cutting out the middleman i.e. "you". Therefore I suspect those same companies would just as soon not have you advertising their new gear and attracting buyers outside your geographic area.

But I can't imagine it's a majority of maufacturers that operate this way - or that companies presume that being on the 'Gon tarnishes their products' image.

I've seen dealer listings and/or on-line store ads at one time or another for new gear from Accuphase, Hovland, Herron, Lamm, Nola, Nordost, Purist Audio, Sonic Frontiers, Vandersteen, Joule-Electra, ATC, Quad, Cardas, Coincident, VPI, Pass, Zu, Naim and others. These companies aren't extactly chopped liver.

As long as your ads are honest and classy and don't violate any manufacturer agreements concerning advertised price or suchlike, I don't think there's any stigma whatsoever selling high end gear on the web. That's an outmoded marketing paradigm IMO.
