I disagree with your first comment on it's intent. Yes, cats are very nosy, (which brings about the whole 9 lives business) and will often do things on the spur of the moment, (like run thru an open door they've never been thru before) because that's what cats do. They are not necessarily trying to get out (although some may be). Mine have done this, only to find themselves NOT where they wanted to be, you could see them saying "oh shit" in their heads and it's a quick 180 and back the other way.

If your cat is consciously trying to evade you and get out, it's part feral or has been out in it's past. Otherwise they're just being nosy cats.

As for the why, well, why neuter it when it has no history of sex? The answer they tell you is it makes it easier on them and you. No chance of spraying, bad behavior etc... I very much contend the same is true for the claws.

The fact is they really DON'T need them. What's more, you are depriving them and you of a nice bit of intimacy because without claws they will scratch on you. I have an orange tabby who does this to me all the time (on my leg). I'd be in shreds if he had claws, but he doesn't. He enjoys it, and so do I when he does it.

Finally, cats are like San Francisco and a killer quake. It isn't if, it's when. Maybe they'll use that post of yours for years and years, but one day, sure as the sun rises, those speaker grilles will look good for some reason and it will be all over but the crying.

Why live with the sword of damarclese over you?

As I type this my orange tabby just "sharpened" on the leather sofa behind me. If he had them, scratch one leather sofa.

You do what you need to do. I am only saying I have owned some 20+ cats in my life, all de-clawed, and not one ever missed them. In fact, my first cat was a persian mix we named Pierre who lived to be 22. He actually learned to make a fist and would punch instead of scratch, and he did go outside. I saw him beat the daylights out of a cat with claws once in fact.

I know it hurt because as a child (we got him when I was 3) you make a lot of noise, and cats often don't like kids for that reason and attack them. (one of ours used to attack my daughter when she sang thru the house) Pierre hit me one day while I was playing on the floor, (I was about 7) right in the back. Felt like a sledgehammer. So when I saw him sock that other cat in the puss a few years later, it had my sympathies...

It's all about the music...
