Tips on keeping cats from clawing speakers?

About a week ago I acquired a (full grown, male) cat, and I'm wondering if anyone has any good tips to keep a cat from using floorstanding speakers as a scratching post.

I have had cats before, but the last was several years ago, and I just had some crappy bookshelf speakers at the time, which I could keep out of cat range and didn't much care whether they were clawed anyway. So far, the cat has actually not shown interest in clawing my floorstanders, but I don't want him to ever get the idea that it is O.K. I have been using a pet repellent spray on the grilles as a preventive measure, but have my doubts about its long-term effectiveness for several reasons: I have used it in the past, and it doesn't really seem to repel that well; it stinks; you have to spray it on every day; and I'm concerned it may do more harm than good for my speakers.

A new idea I'm trying is to wipe the speaker cabinets regularly with Lemon Pledge. Cats are known to dislike the smell, and my theory is that it will help him keep his distance. Has anyone had success with this or other methods? Any tips appreciated.

P.S. Cat-haters are encouraged not to waste bandwidth with cat-bashing responses. If it makes you feel better, I also co-own a dog with my girlfriend. :-)
