Re: Some thoughts on filters

John said: "No Sean, "some" are not happy. Please don't extend your own agenda to those you don't know, have not spoken with, and might well object to you speaking on your behalf. / Again the word you should use is "some." And as I pointed out to you in the private correspondence to which you referred, the allegations evaporate when dragged out into the light. They are nothing more than a case of Chinese Whispers, with someone repeating what someone else was told by yet someone else and then that rumor being taken as fact by someone else. "

My response to John is that, since he has the means to do so, why not set up a poll on the Stereophile website and ask the following questions. This would allow him to see what readers really think in a non-confrontational manner. That is, people could really speak their mind without getting into a "debate".

1) Do you feel that Stereophile:

A) Covers a wide range of products / brand names in their reviews

B) Covers a reasonable range of products / brand names in their reviews

C) Covers a limited range of products / brand names in their reviews

D) Absolutely sucks in terms of products covered in their reviews

2) Do you feel that the subjective text portion of Stereophile reviews are:

A) Completely honest and accurate in description

B) Reasonably honest and mostly accurate in description

C) Lacking in integrity and written in a manner that doesn't offend most manufacturers

D) Mostly useless to the consumer / designed to improve sales for the manufacturer. One may find valuable information if they know how to read between the lines

3) Do you think that Stereophile or any of its' writers / reviewers are corrupt / suffering from a conflict of interests?

A) Not at all

B) Possibly

C) Probably

D) Most definitely

4) Do you think that favouritism is being practiced in terms of the brand names or specific types of gear selected for review in Stereophile?

A) Not at all

B) Possibly

C) Probably

D) Most definitely

5) If you could change THREE things about Stereophile, what would they be:

A) Wider product / brand name coverage in reviews

B) More in-depth show coverage

C) More technical / educational articles

D) Fewer letters to the Editor

E) No multi-channel coverage

F) More multi-channel coverage

G) Test measurements on all gear reviewed

H) No test measurements for any gear reviewed

I) More "head to head" product comparisons

J) Start a new Q & A Tech section

K) More music reviews with greater diversity

L) Fewer music reviews

M) More product reviews

N) More digital based product coverage

O) More vinyl based product coverage

P) More amp & preamp coverage

Q) More speaker coverage

R) More coverage for lower priced gear

S) Less coverage of lower priced gear

Etc......

This would give John a REAL sample of what the people want and are thinking and do so in a manner that would be useful to him and the others at Stereophile.

John said: "You have hard hard evidence of wrongdoing on my part, bring it on or stay quiet. / This is why I offered you and the other conspiracy theorists the opportunity to confront those you defame in a public forum. Not on the Asylum where you can hide behind your computers, not in private where you can subsequently deny what was said, but in public, where everything that is said is on the record and in front of an audience.

My response to the above is that the Asylum IS a public forum. There is no hiding behind computers here as what is discussed is done so in an forum for all to see and participate in. In such a forum as this, everyone is allowed to share their point of view / make their point without interuptions, which is NOT what would take place in a heated "person to person" type debate / argument. On top of that, everything submitted here IS on the record in front of an audience. Albeit a MUCH larger audience than any specific personal confrontation in a building could ever hope to reach.

As to your comments about "not in private where you can subsequently deny what was said", please be specific as to what you are talking about. I have not denied anything nor have i made anything up. If you want to cough up specifics, i'll be glad to respond to them publicly. I specifically did NOT mention what we discussed privately as you asked me to keep that private. I have done just that, but if you want to go public, that is fine with me. Believe me, i have nothing to lose in discussing such things publicly whereas Stereophile and the other parties involved would not come out quite as clean. Personally, i have no interest in dredging that back up as i consider it a closed chapter in Stereophile's history. Having said that, there's obviously enough controversy in the current publication to keep us communicating along the same lines.

John said: "In other words Sean, you, as well as Magnetar and RobertH, only have the courage of your convictions when you are not required to support those convictions in person and in public. Pretty much as expected."

Be for real John. I'm NOT going to create unnecessary expenses for myself to go to New York to argue with you in front of a crowd. As far as me NOT having the "balls" to speak my mind in public, you obviously don't know me. I don't think that there is a person that has ever met me that would consider me shy or not capable of verbalising my thoughts / opinions on any given subject at any given time. Spend some time reading some of my posts over at Agon and i think that you'll get to know me a bit better. On top of that, ask anybody that has ever read any of my posts in the Outside Asylum ( which i am now banned from posting in because i'm not afraid to speak my mind in a non-politically correct manner. I think that you'll find that i'm not afraid of "creating controversy in public". If you don't believe what those people tell you, i've got the real life scars to prove it to you. Maybe you can show me your scars and tell me about the "public debates" that you've been in and i can do the same. That is, if we run into each other sometime in the future. By the way, you're buying and i don't drink cheap American swill either. I'm more along the lines of a Bass, Harp, Guiness, Nordic Wolf, Beck's, etc... kind of guy : ) Sean
