Yeah, the 3.1x is a killer at its price point, especially with good tubes in it. The 4.1x certainly has that sense of spooky realism you mention. Interestingly, one of the things I think contributes to this is the removal of all output filtering, and this was a case of "trickle-out" technology. The change was introduced in the 4.1x range, and from there flowed up to the 5 and down to the 3 and 2. I'm toying with the idea of having a filterectomy done on my 3.1x, though the idea of paying $350 to have parts removed from a piece of gear is a bit of getting used to.I'd love to hear a big AN amp some day - all my dealer carries is the OTO SE integrated, which I'm not that fussy about.
About amp costs - I use Wavelength Tritons, which are fairly pricy. They look pretty much identical to Gordon's less expensive Cardinal X-1's though. When I ordered them, Gordon informed me he could do a version with silver trafos for an extra $25K (I passed). That leads me to suspect that the pricing of the Gaku-on may not be too far out of line with the materials cost. And it's by no means the most expensive tube amp out there. I'd love to hear a Wavac 833 some day - $350K for the top model (gulp) though you can get a lower cost version for only $69K...
