Firewall requirement

marc g, DSL connections are not safe without a firewall -- you still have an IP address which is exposed to the outside world. With a cable modem, you should be extra cautious because you are essentially on a LAN with other local cable modem users. With either cable or DSL, you should use a firewall (either hardware like a router or software such as Norton/McAfee). A router with firewall is especially useful because it allows more than one computer to simultaneously use a single Internet connection.
